The state of the Nation's mental health is in crisis. Considering that one in four people suffers from depression or an anxiety related disorder, its great that there has been a month set aside by the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) to inform consumers about mental health disorders and mental health issues.
Mental Health Month has been observed for over fifty years, and this year's focus is on the mind-body connection. So, if you have been considering learning more about a mental health disorder that you or someone you love may possible have - this is a good time to get resource information at your fingertips.
Human resource departments across the country will be reaching out to employees and offering free screenings, printed information, outreach services, etc.
This is also a good time to review with the appropriate personnel about what mental health services are offered through your company or through your health insurance plan. It's a good idea to know what resources you have available to you in case you ever need to use them quickly.
Learn how many therapy sessions you are allowed per year. See how many clinicians are available for you to choose from. Learn how long of a leave you can take for medical reasons.
If someone in your family has a mental illness, take some time out this month to learn more about their condition and how you can take an active role in supporting them.
The National Mental Health Association (NHMA) is the country's oldest and largest nonprofit organization which advocates and informs people on all aspects of mental health and mental illness.
If you are in a crisis call 1-800-SUICIDE.
